What is The Freedom of Information Act?
South Carolina Code of Laws – Title 30, Chapter 4
SECTION 30-4-15: (PURPOSE) The General Assembly finds that it is vital in a democratic society that public business be performed in an open and public manner so that citizens shall be advised of the performance of public officials and of the decisions that are reached in public activity and in the formulation of public policy.
As a person, you have the right to inspect, copy, or receive an electronic transmission of any public record of a public body unless it is exempt by other parts of the law.

The Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office charges reasonable cost for providing documents. A deposit of 25% of the anticipated cost will be assessed prior to processing the request and payment must be received within 5 business days. No personal checks will be accepted; money orders and cashier checks only.
Upon completion of the request an email will be sent to the requestor with the total cost minus the required anticipated 25% deposit previously paid. Payment must be received within 5 business days. No personal checks will be accepted; money orders and cashier checks only. Once the final payment is received the request will be mailed to the requestor.
Fee schedule is subject to change at any time and can include additional cost depending upon each request.

Scanning and Redaction Fee: $17.00/hour
Archive Retrieval Fee: $22.00/hour
Postage: Standard USPS Rate $7.00/request
Any request exceeding the standard USPS rate will be determined
by weight and added to the final/total cost for the request.
